This is the last number of The Butarque News! We hope you all had enjoyed all our numbers and articles but now… it’s summer time!!

The last exams!

We’re ending the last term of the course. Our exams are up to end but we still have five exams: Grammar, Music, Geography, Mathematics and Physics and Chemistry.
We’re very nervous because they’re difficult but we hope we’ll pass all the exams… and if we don’t pass the exams, we must go to September! I wish nobody will repeat the course.

Summer plans are next year plans!

Summer is here and we want to enjoy it! The beginning of the sunny days, the opening of the swimming pools, the beach… A world of possibilities to have fun every day!

The end of the year is always exciting but now more. We must choose the optional subjects for 4th year and it’s not easy! There are five options: French, Clasical Culture, Maths Ampliation, Physics and Chemistry Ampliation and Biology Ampliation.

The ampliations are for expand our knowledges about the different topics included in the subject. French is to learn this beautiful language as second language, opposite of English and Clasical Culture is to study the ancient Greece and Rome, latin, greek…

If you want to know more, ask to the Department’s Head of the subject.

You must choose also between sciences or letters! There are three specializations: A for sciencies with biology, P&C, and then you could choose Technology or Informatic; B for letters, with music, latin and informatic; and C, with Technology, Informatic and drawing.

The last class days
The home stretch of the year is here! We've got one day of activities and another one to say goodbye to the high school.
This is the calendar of June:

• On the 22nd: party of end of course .This day 3rd º B goes to the swimming pool
• On The 23rd: delivery of activities for the summer
• On The 25th: delivery of notes
• On The 29th: day of claims
• Of the 1 to 3: delivery of matriculations, in the institute.

The rest of the pupils were registering in September (September 4-7)

Welcome to the 15th issue of The Butarque News! Today we will hear about some interesting things, such as our last trip of the year, the last parties we're going to have there, and finally about our two best basketball players.

The swimming pool.

The next 22nd of June, we are going on a trip to the swimming pool in Carrascal. We will leave our highschool at 9:00 am, and we'll come back at 2:00 pm more or less.
I think we'll do some activities with other students from different highschools, and we will be supervised by teachers, rescuers and monitors. We wanted to go the amusement park, but we couldn't and, fortunately, we have had the chance to go to the swimming pool. Anyway, I think we'll have a good time together, and one of the reasons will be because we will finish highschool very soon! (By: Lourdes Fuentes Domínguez, 3ºB )

Parties

The 22nd of June, the students of Butarque High School are going to have a little party, because they want to celebrate the end of the year. We will dance, play football and other sports, and see different dancing styles. Finally we hope to have a nice day! (By: Ana Escribano López, 3ºB)

Basketball match

Last Thursday, two of our classmates, Roberto Villegas and Antonio Sánchez, went to play basketball with other people from our higschool and others to Pablo Neruda Higschool. Before going there, we celebrated a pre-selection match in which the best teams that had been good at the P.E. campaign "Ponle un tapón al botellón", would be rewarded with tickets to see a basketball match, and with playing this game with other people from other higschools in Leganés. Unfortunately, our mates didn't win, but they came very proud of their work at 12:45 p.m., when we were having our always interesting, stimulating, fascinating English class. Welcome to this week issue of our news program. Today, we will hear about the girls volleyball team in Butarque, the Red Cross an the theater play What women invent. But first,

Butarque volleyball team.
The girls volleyball team managede this year to move to fourth. The game was exciting because the school Antonio Gala was the same that disqualified us last year to move to semifinals. The match was closely contested, but unfortunately the girls lost 1-2 in our school, winning only in the first set. Just before finishing, Bea got injured with a sprained muscle but fortunately it was not very serious and we hope she'll recover soon. So we will have to wait until next year. (By Andrea Z.)

The Red Cross.
On Thursday May 14th, the organization Red Cross came to inform all students about volunteering, explaining what it entails to be a volunteer, the groups with whom you can collaborate, etc. To volunteer you need to be at least 16 years old, but if you're under that age, you can take part in workshops and different activities. In Leganés they are about environment and youth. (By Raquel C.)

What women invent.
The nineteenth of May the group 3ºB was invited by a mate of the class to watch a play, What women invent, played at Rigoberta Menchú Theater. The play is about an old lady who believes in ghosts and her niece. This niece, along with the maids of the house, makes the old woman believe she is dead. The play was very good. (By Iria C.)

Strike.

On May 12 there was a strike of Bachillerato supported by almost the whole school who didn't attend classes, they say that soon there will be a second strike (Óscar Moya).

Farewell to Quique.

The substitute teacher of gymnastics has gone away due to the return of Rocío.The pupils of 3ºB wrote to him a letter for him always to remember us. Quique was very grateful. He answered thanking us and giving us his msn address in case we have any doubt. (Carlos Romero)

Break Dance and funky.
In this third term there have been seven workshops. The pupils chose two of then. They have been break dance and funky. In the break dance workshop there were twenty posts on offer and nineteen candidates, but the funky workshop had more candidates than places on offer, so a draw was celebrated. Classes will take place in the small pavillion, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from four 6to six in the aftrernoon. Come and have a look. (Raúl Molina).

The Book's Day

During the days 23, 24, 27 and 28 of April the Book's Day was celebrated in our High School. On April 23, the participant winners of poetry and short story, during the break, we were handed our prizes. Then we leaft school and went to the church of El Salvador to read El Quijote.
During the breaks of 24, 27 and 28, of april, there was a book market organized by the department of Spanish. By David.

Saving Private Ryan.

In the IES Butarque the week of film was helc, during which students from third year were able to watch the film Saving Private Ryan. The movie lasted 170 minutes, a film directed by director Steven Spielberg. The film won five Oscars.
During the invasion of Normandy, in the middle of World War II, a group of American soldiers is assigned to a dangerous mission: to save one man. Patrol Captain John Miller must risk their lives to find and bring back home Soldier James Ryan, whose three brothers have died in the war. The last thing known about Ryan is that he was launched with his platoon of paratroopers behind enemy lines. By Roberto.

Break Dance and Funky

Approximately two weeks ago there were polls about the workshops. Among them the choice of the participants was: break dance, funky, graffiti classes among others. After the counting of votes the chosen ones werebrake dance and funky. On April 27 some helpers for coordinating the program passed around the classes of the institute to verify the participants in the two categories. On April 30 the names of those who were involved were published and finally the day May 5 dance classes began. By José Andrés.

Literature Prizes & The International Day of the Book

The past March, as you must remember, we’d announce the winners of the Butarque Literary Contest. And, now, we’re inviting you to the Prize Giving.

It’s going to be celebrate on Thursday 23rd, because (I hope all you know it) it’s International Day of the Book. On April 23rd, three of the most popular and better writers (Shakespeare, Cervantes and Garcilaso) died.

So, in the morning, the Literature Department is going to proceed to give the winner their awards and then, some teachers and the winners will go to the centre of Leganés to read some fragments of “El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha”. It’s a tradition!

So if you haven’t got class and want to read it in public to celebrate International Day of the Book, come on and go to the Salvador Church and enjoy this beautiful book.

CDI Tests

On Thursday 21st we did the famous test of CDI (Conocimientos y Destrezas Indispensables or Essentials Knowledges and Squills). It's a test only for the Comunidad de Madrid students and it's to know how smart we are.

There are two parts: Maths and Language & Literature. A teacher of Luis Vives called Luis came to pass us the test. It wasn't difficult but not easy.

We all want to know the results but we don't know if they're going to tell it.

The school trip is going to be late

On April 24 a few students of the institute were going to go to a contest of mathematical photography. The school trip was going to be in the zoo. Because of the bad weatherlike the school trip was cancelled and delayed. It will be on Wednesday 29th of April. I hope this day the weatherlike be good. Of this class go Silvia San Segundo , Héctor Egido and me, Mónica Palomares.

PS: this day is the final of the TV programma "Fama a bailar" and i hope you'll see it! It will be celebrated on Leganés' "Cubierta".

Welcome to the teth number of The Butarque News. Today we're going to speak about the Mathematical Photography Contest, the summary of our trip to the mountain and the Easter Holidays. But first,

MATHEMATICAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

The students of our secondary school and others from all Madrid are going to the ZOO the sixteenth of April to take part in a mathematical photography contest. Two girls and a boy from our class has been chosen from another internal contest. They are Héctor, Mónica and Silvia S. Fortunately the school pays for the bus and the ticket so the students don't have to pay money. We don't know for sure the prize that they could receive but we hope that they win something.(By: Aitana González Jiménez E3B)

OUR TRIP TO THE MOUNTAIN

The last Thursday 26th, we went to La Morcuera to spend a day in the mountain. In general, I think we had a good time, but when the walk finished we were very tired.
We left the school at 8:30 am, so we were there at 10:30 aproximately. The time in the bus passed very quickly because we were singing songs of our childhood all the time. It was funny, but some people started to have headache. When we arrived there, we started to walk and as Ángel said, we had to walk for fifteen kilometres; but in the middle of the way, we had a rest. Then, Aitana, Silvia S, and me lost the way. We were climbing and throwing our bags for being able to find the other people, and finally, with the help of our P.E. teacher, Quique, we could.
After a long time walk we arrived to Rascafría and we had lunch. Moreover, some people of this class had to walk into a river to catch a tennis ball, which Héctor had thrown, and that is now lost forever. When we finished lunch the teachers took us a photograph which will be in the secondary school for all the time, as Isabel said.
We were back at four o'clock because some people had to play a basketball match and besides, in Chopera's Park, Quique did some excellents Magic's treats with cards. (By: Silvia García Gozalo E3B)

EASTER HOLIDAYS

I'm very sad because we have to say "good bye" to The Butarque News for a short time, but we can say "hello" to the Easter holidays!
In this period of the year it is common to see processions where people walk for kilometres showing their faith in God. We eat Easter Eggs and "torrijas". The "torrijas" are very common in Spain and they taste really good!
But the most important thing: it's a period to have fun and to do nothing.

Welcome to the ninth issue of our weekly program. Today we will talk about a lecture we have received at Butarque about safety on the Internet; then, we will hear about the Easter marks; and finally, the literary contest that has been celebrated in our school. But first,

INTERNET LECTURE

Last Tuesday, the 17th of March, students of 3ºB ESO received some lessons about the Internet. This was a lecture in which two police officers told us what we have to do if we have any problem in the computer while we are chatting, for instance, or they gave us some pieces of advice and recommendations. At the beggining, we saw a short film, which showed some cases of problems with the Internet, and, after that, the officers explained us a Power Point presentation with all the steps we must follow when we are surfing the Internet and also to take care of strange things, such as unknown people.
To sum up, this Internet speech was focused on lies that some people say to meet children or teenagers, who don't know who the other person is and what he or she wants. Finally, they said that the police know everything we do on the Internet and if someone commits an illegal action, they know who has done it. (By Héctor Egido Jiménez, 3ºB)

EASTER MARKS

This term is finished. We are excited by the end of March, because this part of the course is longer than the others. The second or the third of April (because we don´t know very well) we will come to receive our marks bulletin. I hope the teachers will give us higher marks than in the previous term and that they won't give us homework too. A lot of students at Butarque Secondary School have studied like bookworms and the other students who haven't studied enough can recover the subjets failed in April. The only thing we have to do is push for finishing the term. And, in the end, the well deserved holidays. (By Ana Escribano López, 3ºB)

LITERARY CONTEST

As you probably know, a literary contest has been celebrated in our secondary school. There are two parts: poetry and prose, and into each one, there are two prizes: first and second. The point is that we already have the winners. As the winner of the first prize of poetry, we have David Martínez, with a work called Poema Protesta, and the winner of the second one is Silvia San Segundo, with Vuelve. On the other hand, as the winner of the first prize of prose, we have Lourdes Fuentes, with a story called Mentiras Mortales, and the second prize goes to Daniel Gallego, with his work El callejón. Welcome to the eighth issue of our weekly program. Today we will talk about Father's Day Bank Holiday, a trip to the mountain and Measure by Measure. But first,

Father's Day's Bank Holiday.

The Bank Holiday starts on 19 of March, Father's Day, and it lasts four days: Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22. All students of the IES Butarque are waiting impatiently for Wednesday to arrive because it is the last day of class this week. After this bank holiday there will be less time to reach the Easter vacation and end final tests. Now, the weather is good and that will help us to enjoy the best possible this holiday. Hardly anyone knows what to give as a present to their father, because it must be something wonderful and beautiful to look at when parents remember their children. We should always show the love we feel for them because any day could be the last of our lives. Happy Father's Day, Dad! Because Life can be wonderful, said the man of "Tikitaka". Trip to the mountain.

The trip so long expected. The next 26 of March the 3º ESO groups will go to the mountain. They will leave the school and take the bus at about half past eight and return about five p.m. with teachers of Biology and Physical Education, Isabel and Quique. When they reach about half the route, they will stop to eat (depending on schedule).
They shouldn't lose hope nor fall into the river as in previous years. Cross your fingers so they do not undergo any misfortune and that all is well. Let's hope they arrive safely to their homes. We hope that the trip is short and that everyone will go well and take advantage of one of the few trips available. (Cristina González Calvo, 3ºB)

To the theatre.

Next Wednesday 1st of April, the courses 1st Bachillerato and 3rd ESO will go to see a literary work of Shakespeare. Measure by Measure is the name of the play. The theatre is in 42 Fernández de los Ríos Street, and the price of the ticket is thirteen euros. Students will go by train (Zarzaquemada). The Literature teacher, Irene, will accompany them on their journey at seven o'clock p.m. (María Alcaraz Mascareñas, 3ºB)

Welcome to the seventh program of our weekly series. Today we are going to hear of an end-of-year school trip and about a photography contest. But first,

Fourth of ESO end-of-year trip.
Next 27 March the students of 4 ESO will go on their school trip to Barcelona. Their first visit will be going around the city. The following day they are going to visit El Modernismo, la Sagrada Familia, el Parque Güell and other things. The day 29 they will go to las Ramblas and el barrio Gótico, la Plaza de Cataluña, la Catedral, etc and the third day, wich is the most exciting day, they will all go to Port Aventura. To end up, the 31st they are going to visit the Nacional Museums of Cataluña. The first of April they will come back to Madrid at about midday. It will be an exhausting trip, but we hope they enjoy it a lot (by Andrea Zarza).

Photography Contest.
The objective of this contest is the presence of mathematics in the pictures wich are around as. All secondary students will be able to participate. The topic will be free but related to mathematics: geometry, stadistics, etc. It will be showed series and different photographs about the same contents. Other year this course was taken in Faunia and Aranjuez but this year the photos will be taken in the zoo. The prize will be for the first photograps with its title, for the best digital or analogical photos and for the group of 6 or 8 of the same series (by Iria Calvo).

Welcome to The Butarque News. In our program today, the rugby match; the photo; and the fire drill. But first,

The Rugby Match.

The last Friday was celebrated a rugby match. The teams are Spain vs Georgia. Somebody could go to the match because the gym teacher gave them some free tickets to see the match (by Óscar).

The Photo.

Last Thursday the technology teacher proposed us to do a photography with an aerogenerator that we did in the last term. We said yes to him, so he did us the photo with a camera, but the teacher hasn't given us the photo yet. My classmates made an aerogenerator very well, but someone made it better than others (by Raúl).

The fire drill.

The 27th of February at second hour of class, there was a fire drill. Luckily, at that time, our class was in the playground so we only had to wait to complete it (by Carlos).

Welcome to our weekly program. Today we are going to talk about a visit to the Prado Museum, the Muvies, the Butarque Basketball Championship and Antonio Sánchez. But first,

The Prado Museum.
Last 18th of February, the students of Classic Culture of 3º ESO went with the students of 4º ESO of Latin to the Prado Museum. We were accompanied in the visit by the teacher Juan of Latin and María Jesús of Art. When we got there, we took a free time and we had a walk for the surroundings of the museum. Then, at a quarter to twelve, we entered the museum and saw sculptures and paintings of mythology. We saw pictures of Goya, of Velázquez, of Rubens... Finally, after we had finished the visit, we went back to our school by coach. (By David).

The Muvies.

It was a trip to Muvies, that is, a sample of videos made at school. The authors were invited to watch the videos made at different schools. Most of the students studying French were the authors and they would like to thank the students from different courses for their collaboration. (By Jose Andrés).

Butarque Basketball Championship.

Our school conducted a Butarque Basketball Championship, which will be in classes throughout the school, where the three best basketball players in each class will play against other three. Matches will be played at half track until they reach ten points, the first team to reach ten points win. The winning school team will receive prizes, as happened previously when the competitions were free kick, triple, three to three and skills. I remember that we were visited by Romay. This project is organized by the Fundación Sociocultural Basketball, from Spanish Basketball Federation. The date is not yet fixed. (By Juanma).

As was announced last week, student Antonio Sánchez from 3ºB suffered a knee injury playing football. He will be away for three weeks, after which he hopes to return to school. He had intended to return on February 23rd but he couldn't. (By Roberto).

Welcome to the fourth issue of our secondary school weekly. Today we will hear of an accident at Butarque, defending public school and school trips. But first,



Accident in Butarque.
Last Tuesday, at Butarque school a fellow student from 3ºB suffered an accident while playing basketball. Antonio suffered an accident and one of the teachers went to call for an ambulance to take the boy to hospital. Finally, the ambulance arrived and took the kid away. Here, we hope our fellow is well and better soon.

Defending public education.
We ask for an inmediate withdrawal of all the Bologna plans and privatization measures. A decent job when finishing our studies. Not even a workers' euro for the bankers Let the crisis be paid by their leaders: the capitalists. All to the fight. General strike on March 4th.

School Trips.
Last Tuesday some students of Butarque Secondary School have attended a trip to Guadarrama Mountains to learn to ski. A short course of two hours in which to lead students through the snow to learn how to manage this very practiced sport in places where it snows much: skiing. Other students went in another trip to the Prado Museum, accompanied by several teachers to admire some of the great works of painting, very well known at the time of our ancestors.

Welcome to the second issue of our secondary school weekly. Today, we will hear of a chat with Andrés Amorós; our school trip to the snow, cancelled; and plans for a trip to La Granja. But first,

A chat with Andrés Amorós

The last 25th of January, we attended a wonderful chat with Professor Emeritus Andrés Amorós. He was an important Professor from University “Complutense” of Madrid. He also used to be a teacher of Spanish and Literature at a secondary school when he was young. He has also written more than one hundred books.
He came to our school to tell us more about Renaissance – specially poetry and prose. He started to talk about Renaissance movement: the idea of the perfection, Platonism, the fight against the illiteracy, the man as the centre of universe… It was very interesting!
Then, he continued to read some fragments of poetry by Garcilaso de la Vega, an important poet from XVI century. He explained the style, the rhyme and the special characteristics of some poems.
He also spoke a bit about Baroque versus Renaissance.
We are a bit young to understand all the explanations, but our Spanish teacher did her best to let us follow the lecture. Professor Amorós was quite funny and not distant at all. We didn’t do anything anything else but taking notes in all the hour!

Our school trip, cancelled.

The last 27th of January we were to make a school trip called “Madrid blanca”. In this school trip we would go to the snow to learn to ski and it would take place between 7:45 and 17:30 . There were only fifty seats and we had to draw lots to select the people, but in the end there were only forty-five appliants so the raffle was not celebrated. The students who are to attend the school trip are from every class and every age. It will be so fun!
When the day arrived, the school trip was cancelled because the ski resort was closed because of the bad weather.
It will take place in February 27th. I hope the resort will be open that day.

We’re planning a school trip!

Our teacher Belén Dorao wants to go with all the class to the royal palace of “La Granja de San Ildefonso”, a beautiful XVIII century building in Segovia.
We’re planning funny activities, and also two contests: a tale contest, with pieces written by the pupils, and other photography one, both with money prizes.
We are also interested in visiting the crystal fabric near the palace. Our Technology teacher told us about it a few days ago. We want to go in the middle of March, when exams end.

MUVIES FESTIVAL

The 24th of January, the students of 3ºB E.S.O shot a short film to present in a competicion. This film presents the real life, because it's normal that children want to do what their parents do. The idea is about the gender violence from the children's point of view. The shooting was difficult because there was a lot of wind, but the filming team are very happy with the results. And I only want to say to my classmates good luck, because I think you deserve the best.

BASKETBALL AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL

This last two weeks have been really exciting for students who are into sport and for all the high school in general. We couldn´t imagine that Fernando Romay, one of the most important basketball players some years ago, came to visit and play some games with us.
This man is inside a campaign called "Ponle un tapón al botellón", aimed to teach students of E.S.O. the importance of knowing what we are eating or drinking. Some monitors came to our classes to show us for example what happens when we drink a lot of alcohol. Afterwards, Romay came and play basketball doing a championship with pupils from the same class. There were two games: the first consisted in throwing the ball into the basket three times. What we had to do was to try to score the maximun. And the second game was a little match of four or five people in each team. Finally, and what we didn´t know, was that the winners (those with the highest score in both games) had a prize for playing so well and learning through sport. Our class was one of the most awarded and we achieved lots of T-shirts, basket balls, and sport comics.
We enjoyed very much this entertaining visit!!!

THE HOLOCAUST

The 27th of January, a woman is coming to our high school in order to explain something about the holocaust, an important part of the History. The Holocaust is the genocide of thousands of European Jews during the second World War. This fantastic woman is called Monica, and she's going to tell us her story and, in general, the story of the Jews in Europe. From my point of view, knowing this kind of things is essential in our daily lives, because it will remind us of the mistakes that the Europeans did in the past, and, that way, we'll be able to correct them properly.
The chat will last almost one hour and a half, and, maybe, if we ask her, she could give us some relevant answers to our questions. So, if you're interested in Jews' History and European History, it will be a good opportunity to know something else.
